Will Grassby is a teacher specializing in ESL/EFL as well as senior level English. He has
taught in the TCDSB (Toronto Catholic District School Board) at the University of Toronto in their ECP (English Communication Program), in LINC classrooms (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), as well as teaching French at Oxford Learning Richmond Hill East.
Will also has extensive experience through his work and ongoing involvement with the internationally recognized organization L'Arche. Since 2007 he has worked as a house and program assistant, house leader, volunteer and consultant. Jean Vanier calls the L'Arche communities "Universities of the Heart" where people can learn virtues such as peace, love, relationship and community. Learning happens everywhere, everyday. In life, we are all both learners and teachers. The concept of the 'co-learner' is the foundation of everything that I teach.
For its 50th anniversary L'Arche started the "with" campaign to promote the benefits of relationship between people of all abilities. The idea is that when we do things 'with' people, instead of 'for' or 'to,' we break down the power dynamics that separate us and begin to connect on a more human level that fosters growth and learning. This, combined with the concept of the "Lifelong Learner" who is always reflecting and growing, is the basis for my slogan: "Never stop learning 'with.'" When we see ourselves as co-learners, we become equals and when we are equals, boundaries fall away and the potential for growth of both teacher and student alike is limitless.
The poster below summarizes my teaching philosophy in two words: Learn 'with.'
